When Edmond's house is burned down and his fiancée is murdered by Baron Danglars, who then imprisons him in a dungeon, Edmond manages to escape and swears vengeance on the Baron and others who also helped. When he escapes, he becomes the Count of Monte Cristo, and manages to get revenge on the Baron by killing him at a ball. It is then that Edmond meets Queen Regina Mills, who offers to give him the names of the other accomplices in exchange for helping her exact vengeance on Princess Snow and Prince David. To earn their trust, Edmond poses as the survivor of a ransacked village, and is invited to Snow and David's castle. However, he chooses not to poison them and escapes to the Land of Untold Stories with the help of Rumplestiltskin.
When Mr. Hyde brings all the inhabitants of the Land of Untold Stories to Storybrooke, the Evil Queen rips out Edmond's heart and uses it to control him, ordering him to murder Snow and David. Although Regina, who has changed her ways and befriended them, tries to dissuade Edmond, she is eventually forced to fatally stab him.
