The Witch of the North is one of the four sorceresses in the Sisterhood of Witches in Oz, representing the power of Wisdom. She warmly welcomes both Zelena, who later becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and Dorothy Gale, a young girl from Kansas. When Zelena banishes Glinda and sends Dorothy back to Kansas, she rules Emerald City, and the Witch of the North joins her in becoming wicked. When woodcutter Stanum chops down a tree in the Wicked Witch of the North's domain, she places a curse on him that slowly turns him into tin.
- She alludes to the Good and Wicked Witches of the North from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
- The time-travel spell that Zelena tries to enact in Storybrooke requires ingredients that represent the same virtues as the Sisterhood. While the Witch of the North represents Wisdom, so does Rumplestiltskin's brain, which is used for the spell.
