The Wraith, or Qui Shen (Chinese: 魁陈, Kuí Chén), is a character on ABC's Once Upon a Time. It is a soul-sucking undead demon that goes after anyone who has touched the Wraith's medallion with their bare hands.
Biography
Season 2
After the first Dark Curse is broken, Rumplestiltskin attempts revenge on Regina Mills by marking her hand with the medallion, then summoning the Wraith to suck out her soul. The Wraith nearly does this, but Regina is helped by Emma, Snow and David. They open a portal with Jefferson's hat, which they use to banish the Wraith to the Enchanted Forest, but the Wraith drags Emma with it. Snow also jumps into the portal after Emma, and the portal closes.
In the Enchanted Forest, the Wraith attacks Princess Aurora, Prince Phillip and Mulan before retreating. Phillip finds the medallion, and touches it with his bare hands, prompting the Wraith to go after him and suck out his soul. However, somehow, Phillip's soul is returned by Aurora and Mulan.
Season 3
When Emma drinks a potion which restores her memories of Storybrooke, the Wraith is one of the memories.
Trivia
- The Wraith is apparently already dead, according to Regina.
- Along with draining people of their souls, it can also heal or 'regenerate'.
- It is known as the Qui Shen in Mulan's village.
- The light is apparently the Wraith's adversary. This is shown when the Wraith eventually retreats while exposed in daylight, and when it is warded off with flames in Storybrooke.
- The Dark One can summon the Wraith, if they have the medallion.
- The Wraith shares many similarities with Dementors from the Harry Potter franchise. They have a clear visual resemblance, as well as a penchant for draining people of their souls.
